After over fifty years in public life, Old Joe Biden has a well-deserved reputation for dishonesty, and he added to it Thursday while trying to save face after Vladimir Putin ignored his sanctions threats and invaded Ukraine. The sanctions, you see, were intended to stop Putin in his tracks. When they failed to do so before the eyes of a watching world, Biden did not, of course, admit that he had miscalculated or underestimated Putin. Instead, he simply changed his story, with all the insouciance he displayed as a young Syracuse University College of Law student plagiarizing a law review article. He must think no one is paying attention.
Biden emphasized Thursday that the sanctions were not meant to stop Putin from invading Ukraine or to get him to call off the invasion. “No one expected the sanctions to prevent anything from happening,” he claimed. “This could take time and we have to show resolve so he knows what’s coming and so the people of Russia know what he’s brought on them, this is what this is all about. This is going to take time, it’s not going to occur … he’s gonna say ‘Oh my God, these sanctions are coming, I’m gonna stand down.’”
Well, all right, Joe, but why does no one on your team seem to know this? That noted lodestar of foreign policy expertise, Kamala Harris, contradicted you on Sunday when she said, “The purpose of the sanctions has always been and continues to be deterrence.” She asserted that this was a “shared perspective among our allies. And the Allied relationship is such that we have agreed that the deterrence effect of these sanctions is still a meaningful one, especially because … we still sincerely hope that there is a diplomatic path out of this moment. And within the context then of the fact that that window is still open although it is absolutely narrowing — but within the context of a diplomatic path still being open, the deterrence effect, we believe, has merit.” Well, great, but either it does or it doesn’t, and why don’t the putative president and vice president have their story straight?
Harris wasn’t alone among the Bidenites in saying that the sanctions would deter Putin from striking Ukraine. On Feb. 11 — you know, way before Canada became a dictatorship for a week and Putin decided that Biden’s handlers were so weak that he could essentially do whatever he wanted — National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan attributed a belief in the deterrent power of sanctions to Biden himself: “The President believes that sanctions are intended to deter. And in order for them to work — to deter, they have to be set up in a way where if Putin moves, then the costs are imposed….

The reason that Russia has not been taken off SWIFT is that Europe and even the US would be unable to buy their oil. Even now, we are buying 700k barrels of oil, and this is after Putin’s announcement of the recognition of Donetsk and Luhansk ‘people’s republics’
I tend to agree w/ Rand Paul on this issue: sanctions are not gonna be what works, particularly when there are no carrots for good behavior. Also, like I said in the last thread, it’s time to stop pretending that Russia is the Soviet Union, even if Putin once worked for the KGB, and instead, draw out agreements w/ them that respect the sovereignty of Ukraine, Belarus, et al while respecting their security needs – Moscow is dangerously close to the borders of both Belarus and Ukraine. And either admit Russia itself into NATO, or disband that organization completely: it’s a great arrangement for every NATO member, except the US that’s doing the heavy lifting in terms of both men and money.
We have our own issues in the Americas w/ our open borders and just about every country excepting Colombia and Brazil going Leftist, thereby making it more likely that people from the entire continent will try to come here. And there’s also the Indo-Pacific, w/ China being the Soviet Union of today and trying to conquer the world

Besides, given NATO’s history post 1992, it really has little to recommend it. Their ‘achievements’ – bombing Serbia and prying out Kosovo, bombing Libya to oust Gadaffi, that’s it. And they are a fantastic deal for every member of the alliance except the US
Once all this is over, the US should withdraw from NATO and do bilateral deals w/ Ukraine, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. No need to involve 2-faced ‘allies’ like Germany or Italy, who are pushing back on sanctions b’cos they want carve-outs for oil or diamonds. NATO is becoming as worthless as the UN b’cos countries like Germany exercise a de-facto veto power over policies. Time to leave it and work out deals w/ countries peripheral to our enemies

NATO in the past enabled the Kosovars to break away from Serbia by bombing them for weeks. There is no reason to suggest that if any region within Russia itself were to rebel, that NATO wouldn’t similarly support them. Remember in the 90s, when the West was critical of the Russian war against Chechnya? This was before Putin came to power, so Russians are justified in thinking that the West would like to dismember them even further
Otherwise, when Russia tried to join NATO in the 90s, they wouldn’t have been rebuffed, by no less a figure than Bill Clinton

Sanctions clearly don’t work on those who don’t believe they need whatever is being denied, and esp, those who don’t believe they will be denied.
