Merry Christmas to all those Christians who are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ today.

One of the fundamental good ideas of Christianity is summed up in the most famous of New Testament passages: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that whoever believes in Him would not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16) That is, despite all appearances to the contrary, God really does love the world. This love of God for the world, in the mystery of things, is expressed through the suffering of the cross, which is then followed by the resurrection. The Christians who are suffering persecution for their faith today in Nigeria, and Pakistan, and Iraq, and Egypt, and Iran, and other Muslim countries are walking the way of the cross, confident that God does indeed love the world and so will not leave them to carry the cross without eventually bringing them to the resurrection.

Neither they nor we, however, can afford to be quietist and simply to hope that one day their suffering will all be redeemed. It is up to us to call attention to their suffering, and to try to move the conscience of the world to act to relieve their suffering now and prevent it from recurring in the future. This is an uphill battle, because even as Islamic jihadists attack Christians with unremitting fury, we see the world, including Christian authorities in the West, yawning and remaining indifferent. Weak and cowardly Christian leaders say we must not talk about all this, for fear of “provoking” Muslims and harming a chimerical and fruitless (at best) Muslim/Christian “dialogue.” Those who dare anyway to speak out about the persecution of Christians that the persecutors justify by invoking the Qur’an and Sunnah are vilified, demonized, and silenced as “bigots” and “Islamophobes.” Even some Christians do this to their fellow Christians who speak unwelcome truths on these matters.

So here is something to remember this Christmas: if you are a free human being, whether or not you are Christian, those Christians who are being persecuted in the Islamic world are standing in your place. The jihadis would just as soon attack you as well, and will eventually if they get the chance. Remember that the Islamic jihadis have you on their list. You may not be a Christian. You may not be a Jew. You may not be a Hindu. You may not be a Buddhist. You may not wish to pay attention to the jihad at all. But the jihad is universal, and relentless. And you are on its list.

So this Christmas, may all of us whose conversion, subjugation, or death is envisioned by the adherents of Sharia stand together. Let us stand together as Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, atheists, secularists, what have you, and stand up against those who would kill us or subject us to institutionalized discrimination and harassment (at best) because they find our beliefs offensive.

For be assured: if we do not stand together, they will prevail. And if they prevail, then all the richest manifestations of the unfettered human spirit, from Hagia Sophia to the temple of mausoleums of Timbuktu, from the works of Socrates and Aristotle to those of Confucius and Moses Maimonides and Dante Alighieri and Winston Churchill and Oriana Fallaci, will be trampled into the mud, destroyed, exploded, ruined, effaced. We will all be the poorer. Our children will be the poorer.

It is time, more than ever, to fight for our freedom, and for our very lives.

  1. One of the most memorable sermons I have heard was spoken in a Presbyterian church by a ThD pastor. His message was that since we really do not know the day Jesus was born, every day is just as valid to celebrate his birth as every other. Merry Christmas Every Day, with all the joy, hope and dreams that go with the start of a new life.

    Robert commented, “The jihad is universal, and relentless. And you are on its list”. Every non-Muslim – whether religious or not – should heed this warning.

    Here in Australia, Christmas day is now almost over. We spent the day with a group of like minded friends (a mix of religious and non-religious) all actively involved in a group which opposes Islam.

    There are plenty of non-Christians who feel the same. Next year please include us in your Merry Christmas salutation! I’m an atheist and my wife is a Muslim. We both love Christmas and Western civilization. Merry Christmas to all!

      That greeting is implied! These days, you don’t know which non-Christians will take offense at ‘Merry Christmas’ instead of ‘Happy Holidays’ or ‘Season’s Greetings’. So what he did is perfect, and non-Christians who nonetheless celebrate can wish him as well

    Christmas was never meant to be celebrated as it is not found in the scriptures. God, in His wisdom did not allow the date to be mentioned in the scriptures as man would have made it the worst day of the year with all kinds of merrymaking. We are already witnessing drunkenness in unprecedented scale in the name of Christmas every year. God in His prophesy mentions Cyrus in the Scriptures, likewise he could have mentioned the date of birth of Christ too. On the contrary God does tell Christians to celebrate His son’s death, burial and resurrection. The early Christians followed it in letter and spirit.

    If the world celebrates Christmas as a year-end holiday it would still be fine.

    • It is true….the Bible does not tell us the date Jesus was born. what it does tell us is so much more important…the *why* and the *result* of His birth as a human.

      God has “goodwill toward men.” And Jesus said to “remember” Him by the meal He shared with His disciples…His apostles…that last night.

      Jesus told us to “preach” His good news until He returns. And this we do. Some Christians choose to follow the traditions of their family history and celebrate. I feel as long as people are doing their best to serve God and obey Jesus’ commands as best they can, they will not be forgotten…because this is the Promise of Jesus.

      None of us have a perfect understanding of God’s Will. But like the poor widow who gave two small coins of very little value, on what each of us does for Love of God and His Son, God puts a high value, just as Christ said He did, on what the widow gave….”all she had.””.

      I am looking forward to Christ’s Return…when all the earth will “see the Sign of the Son of Man,” and He will save us from this wretched life spent waiting. Paradise with Him is what He promised the thief who put faith in Him. Paradise on earth. That is what we also have been promised. (Revelation 21)

    • Is PA then claiming that Judaism is another islamic sect, like sunni, shi’a,…? Since Jesus was Jewish, y’know! I’m not sure about ‘Isa’ – whether he was a Jew or not

        • I read your link. It’s laughable that they call Jesus the first ‘Palestinian shahid’, since Isa – which I assume is who they’re actually referring to – got another person to die on the cross in his stead. Even Pali Jihadis don’t do that, except for their leaders

    • Incidentally, one question that struck me:

      Was Jesus Christ born on December 25th, 0001 BC or December 25th 0000 AD?

      • There is no zero year. According to some who profess to know, He was born around 2 B.C….and the Bible says 6 months after His cousin, John who came to be known by what he did…baptism.
        the Bible gives some information about the year of Jesus’ birth when it says those things about who was “ruler” here and another there, and then when He was 30 years old He began preaching, preached for 3 years, died and was resurrected in 33 C.E.

        But as far as the December 25, date…there is no certainty. The “shepherds were in the fields with their flocks’ when His birth was announced to them and was it extremely cold, or a milder time of year in Israel? Would they have been outside in December?

        and the astrologers from Babylon arrived about 2 years later. They saw a star that had been assigned by astrologers to the King of the Jews. They traveled to Jerusalem to find Him, and that is why herod had all the little boys 2 years and under killed. Because the astrologers couldn’t get there overnight…it took them some time to get ready and travel to meet and give gifts to the new King.

        Gold, frankincense and myrrh were gifts given to Kings.

        And I have written more than you wanted to know.

        • S.H., is there truth in the statement that December 25 was chosen by the Roman Emperor to co-opt the birthday of Mithra, a competing religious person? Among many sources of research, please consider Burton Mack’s Who Wrote the New Testament. According to a PhD Baptist preacher, it took over 100 years of Christology to decide the issue of whether Jesus was human or God. In any case, we are inspired to be better because of his life and teaching. A Rabbi friend readily agreed Jesus was the first well-known Reform Jew, to be followed about 1800 years later by the Reform Jewish movement. “Ask every question repeatedly: each time it is asked, the answer comes back clearer, brighter and less tarnished, but never in this lifetime perfect.” I think you would be pleased by visiting many times Reform Jewish services. I was amazed by what I learned.

        • The 2BC sounds interesting. Generally, one would have assumed that if BC stands for ‘Before Christ, then the day of his birth would be day zero, year zero. I know that the Romans didn’t have ‘zero’, but then that would have meant that they went directly from 1 BC to 1 AD

          The general population wasn’t fully aware of who Jesus was when He was born and since the Romans ruled over the Jews at the time, their counting would have been applied.
          It seems that to begin the Christian Era with His birth would have made a lot of sense, however. If they had but known. You are welcome and thank you.

          I have read that it was stated as Dec 25 because that day was already being celebrated by the saturnalia group and so it was decided that if Christians had a day, to celebrate, it should be the same day so as to unite the nation. You know, get everybody on board? Constantine, was the Roman ruler then and made Christianity the State religion.

          I like knowing as much about the history of the Jews as possible because the Bible was written by Jews, Jesus was a Jew, and so were many of the best people who have ever lived.
          To know and understand the faith, culture, the meanings of words, etc. makes reading the Bible so much more understandable, interesting and satisfying.
          But, I don’t go anywhere for religious services.

        • S.H. I deeply respect your right and choice to not go to religious services. For about 7 years from 1965 to 1972, I had the same resistance. Please permit me to suggest, with all courtesy intended, that learning about the similarities of Reform Judaism and Christianity could be as educational and enlightening for you as it was for me, starting in Nashville in 1992 and continuing until 2015, when my questioning what appears to me the surrender to islam rendered me persona non grata. What I learned and the friends who shared with me will always be treasured, all of whom are now dead or moved away. I found in the more than 20 years of community that there is much error taught in Christianity about Judaism, in the time of Jesus and especially now.

          You may find the books Jews, God and History and What is a Jew interesting. Please accept this comment coming from a friend.

          I understand your concern that I have gotten *error* about the Jews, but I feel that since I have both known Jews and studied their history, as well as the Bible, I am not of the same mind and thought as many Christians.

          Many people blame the Jews, while many feel that they must show more than the usual concern for the Jews. I have neither view. Mine is a more balanced perspective of their religion and their part in the death of Jesus. And yes, the Jews living at that time, did play a part. How could they not? They also played a part in His being born and what He did.

          But, that does not color how I feel about any living today. After all, I would not want to be held responsible for what my ancestors may have done or neglected to do.

          I spent many years going to religious services. There is error everywhere. I just don’t feel the need to go, nor do I trust any group enough with that part of my life to go and be lead as to what to believe and think. My “load” is my own to carry with the help of Jesus and His Father, and my burdens….no one wishes to help me with those. No human, any way, except my own children. so, I rely on my God for help there too.

  17. Merry Christmas all, I’m so glad this site exists and for Robert and all contributors and commenters. My personal goal is to think on this a little more “those Christians who are being persecuted in the Islamic world are standing in your place”. Thank you Robert for the reminder and call to action.

    • Paul, I must agree with David Horowitz that Christians everywhere, including the US are under determined attack at all times. What some may concede as the islamic world, muslims see as only the part they have conquered so far. And the traitors who collaborate with them in destroying and enslaving seem to be pretty much everywhere, with few notable and worthy exceptions. The lessons of history must be remembered if free people are to not only survive but prevail. Surrender, submission and defeat are not available options.
