His lawyer says he was having a “clear mental health episode” during a previous violent incident in 2019. Maybe he was, and maybe he was again this time. But you can hear him screaming “Allahu akbar” at around 6:37 of this video. Nowadays officials frequently ascribe what is clearly jihad activity to mental illness. Was Ajmal Amani a jihadi? We will likely never know for sure, but he certainly seems to have imbibed the idea of the appropriateness of violence in certain circumstances from the culture of violence in which he was raised. But such considerations are out of bounds for officials in the U.S., who are dogmatically bound to the claim that Islam is a religion of peace that has nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Police on Wednesday released video of officers shooting a knife-wielding man who charged at them in a residential hotel.
Ajmal Amani, 41, was shot Friday morning in the narrow corridor of the building on South of Market after threatening several people with a large kitchen knife. He was shot in the stomach and leg and died at a hospital.
Amani was a former Afghan interpreter for U.S. special forces who had been shot several times during more than five years of service and struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder, his former lawyer, his case manager and a property manager told the San Francisco Chronicle.
Amani was charged with assault with a deadly weapon in 2019 for allegedly slashing a city park ranger with a box cutter who said he appeared to be in an “altered mental state.”
Amani was ordered to undergo mental health diversion which he completed this year and was living in a city-rented room at the residential hotel.
Police were called to the hotel on Friday morning by reports that a man was screaming and yelling and had a knife. Amani’s case manager also called 911 to report that a co-worker said Amani was having “a really bad episode.”
On Wednesday, police released hotel surveillance video and footage from officers’ body cameras. They show Amani holding and gesturing with the knife, confronting two people, including someone who is fending him off with a broom, then walking past other people into a room.
When two officers arrive, the man with the broom tells them that Amani had threatened to kill him.
An officer tells the radio dispatcher that they can hear Amani screaming.
According to body camera video, the officers remain in the corridor and try to talk to Amani, who is in a room. Amani swears and tells them to leave him alone and one officer says “nobody wants to hurt you.”
Less than a minute later, Amani charges down the hallway and is shot after an officer shouts: “Stay there! Stay there!”
Police said Amani was holding a knife with a 6-inch blade. He was shot four times with a handgun and three times with bean-bag projectiles.
As Amani lay on the ground, still moving, more officers arrived. They waited several minutes to cautiously approach him, then handcuffed him and used CPR and a tourniquet on him before paramedics arrived….

Years before San Francisco police shot and killed him, 41-year-old Ajmal Amani helped translate for Navy SEALS fighting in Afghanistan.
Amani was an Afghan interpreter who contracted with the U.S. government over the course of a decade, according to Scott Grant, a deputy public defender who later represented him in a criminal court case.
He survived being shot multiple times during his five-year tenure working with the military, but struggled with severe post-traumatic stress disorder after coming to the U.S. on a visa in 2014, Grant said.
“He suffered some of the most horrific trauma anyone could have gone through,” Grant told the SF Standard.
Amani was shot and killed by police last Friday morning after officers responded to a report of a man with a knife at the Covered Wagon Hotel at 917 Folsom St., a residential hotel in South of Market….
This was not the first time Amani had a run-in with the law.
In November 2019, Amani was arrested after crashing a woman’s car near the Seventh Street off-ramp of Highway 80 in San Francisco. He was accused of using a boxcutter to cut a city park ranger who stopped at the scene of the crash and tried to pull him from the vehicle, according to Grant.
Grant said Amani was in the midst of a “clear mental health episode.”
Amani faced attempted murder and other charges in connection with the incident, but a judge dismissed the attempted murder charge at a preliminary hearing, Grant said. The remaining assault charges against him were dismissed after he completed mental health diversion in August….

“mental health” is always brought into the picture, as though they can’t recognize that many people with mental health issues are never violent, and others not so afflicted, do frequently get violent; so when these mozlums go on the terror rampage, it’s all about their mental status.

It’s belief status and it can’t be cured by others talking to them unless they sincerely want it to be cured.
He came on a VISA, and stayed at the expense of taxpayers. And he caused trouble and committed crimes and was allowed to keep staying at taxpayers’ expense.

For me, this is a difficult one, time and again I see my mates who are fucked in the head from their time in the Ghan and hear the stories of the interpreters who worked with them.
They were basically an honourable bunch that just wanted a safe country for their kids.
A lot of them got wounded, quite a few got killed and almost all of them have PTSD in one form or another.
Having seen first hand how PTSD can affect vets, I have no trouble believing that this guy, who served the SEALS for 5 years can have severe mental problems, even the other guys living around him knew this as they had seen it before.
The only good to come out of this situation is that nobody got hurt and that now, hopefully this warriors soul is at rest.

The solution to their cases would have been to have them settled in neighboring countries based on their ethnicity. Like if he was a Tajik interpreter, arrange to settle him in Tajikistan. If Uzbek, Uzbekistan, if Hazara, Bahrein, if Pashtun, UAE or Qatar. That way, at least islam wouldn’t be a reason for them to go postal. Bringing them to non-muslim countries was always a bad idea

I have treated countless US Servicemembers with PTSD.
Most suffer chronic anxiety/depression, but I have even heard of one getting violent in the name of any “religion”…

Yes–this is very specific to Islam, and is not the result of trauma (often the cause of it for others, though). Of course, Islam teaches this kind of violence as the highest, most praiseworthy act of faith.

Good post, Alexander. Of course, good people have critiized Islam before–this used to be quite acceptable in the West–and that did not destroy Islam in and of itself. But informing people of the truth of the savagery of Islam *certainly* helps. People need to know about the threat, and are often in ignorance or denial of this today.
