Would David Isaac have apologized if the college had hosted a Muslim conference that criticized Christianity? What do you think?
“‘Cancel culture’ strikes again as Oxford’s Worcester College – run by former equalities and LGBTQ+ charity chief – apologises to students for ‘distress’ caused by hosting Christian conference,” by Stephen Wynn-Davies, MailOnline, September 22, 2021:
An Oxford college has been accused of ‘cancel culture’ after apologising to students for the ‘distress caused’ after it hosted a Christian conference.
Worcester College hosted a Christian Concern training camp at the beginning of September while the college was closed for the summer break.
Students reportedly complained that the curriculum for the week-long event – which also hosted a speaker reportedly linked to ‘conversion therapy’ – was ‘Islamophobic’ as the final day included a discussion about ‘the nature of Islam’.
In its apology, the college said booking the event ‘was a serious failure that has caused significant distress’ to students who discovered a leaflet from the event when they returned to the college after summer….
David Isaac, who took over as the new Provost of Worcester College in July this year, is understood to have ordered an investigation into the hosting of the residential camp after receiving a complaint from the president of the student union.
Mr Isaac was the previous chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), during which time it released guidelines to protect ‘freedom of expression amid growing criticism of no-platforming decisions’. He was also previously chairman of the LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall.
Christian Concern, which held its annual Wilberforce Academy at the college from September 6 to September 11, said none of the students who complained or the college heard what was said in the seminars….
A spokesman for Worcester College told The Tab: ‘We deeply regret the distress caused to students, staff and other members of the college community by the presence of the Wilberforce Academy conference.
‘The college was not aware of the speaker list or programme content in advance. The booking was taken in good faith, but it is clear that our procedures did not work as they should. We have begun an urgent review to ensure that this does not happen again.
‘We have agreed with the JCR (Junior Common Room) Committee that the profit from the conference will be set aside to fund dedicated equality, diversity and inclusivity initiatives.
‘We are working with students and other members of the college community to identify the most appropriate projects.
‘We acknowledge that this was a serious failure that has caused significant distress, and we apologise unreservedly to all those who have been affected.’…

“that has caused significant distress’ to students who discovered a leaflet from the event when they returned to the college after summer….”
You mean it provoked attention-seeking hysteria and possibly bloodlust too. It didn’t cause “distress”.
“We have agreed with the JCR (Junior Common Room) Committee that the profit from the conference will be set aside to fund dedicated equality, diversity and inclusivity initiatives.”
He means the opposite of “inclusivity”. He’s going to exclude anyone who dares question Islam. Britain is a dying, Islamofascist nightmare.

+1 I guess that it is racist to employ the old and very truly applicable attitude of “Live and let live.”

Every time you think “It can’t happen here,” — it does. Again.

Britain is a dying, Islamo fascist nightmare
You are an idiot and an ill informed idiot to boot. Yu also do not understand the meaning of fascist. As a citizen of UK I refute your claim absolutely
David says
Will there be a similar reaction if there was an islamic conference? Perhaps it should be banned in advance, to avoid offending Christians. After all islam is offensive, and always has been.
This bloke is an absolute danger to British Society.
latest news from Afghanistan: The new ‘modern’ taliban regime is introducing the ‘old’ Sharia punishment laws. No surprise there then! They want to be recognised by the UN. Seriously?
CogitoErgoSum says
Let me guess. He’s going to take all the money made from the Christian conference and use it to fund a Gay Pride parade to be held every Sunday in the month of June. Wait. Why not make it every Friday in honor of all the Muslims students at the university? Maybe he could choose a different Muslim from among the students to be grand marshal each time – so that Muslims can take pride in the diversity too.

The FSU Freedom of Speech Union has already contacted Mr Isaacs about his apology. The event was no even held whilst those snowflakes were in college, but they were caused distress. By the way the Ofcom, the govt. dept.is suggesting the word snowflake as likely to cause offence or distress on broadcast programmes!
PRCS says
‘None of the students who complained actually heard what was said in the seminars. Neither does the college know what was said. They appear just to want to shut down any discussion.

Likely the case. Appalling.

Oh, so now, and in a university and universities are supposed to be about the free exploration of ideas, discussions about the “nature of Islam” are not allowed. This is sickening. Of course, the nature of Islam or Christianity or Zoroastrianism should be open for discussion. This is a sick and dangerous world these days where anything that falls slightly out of line with the politically correct view of things is cancelled.
gravenimage says
Spot on, Tim. When I was at college it never occurred to me that I would never hear anything that I disagreed with, or even found offensive. It is a grotesque concept, *especially* at a university.
tim gallagher says
Yes, it’s a bizarre world these days, gravenimage, that’s for sure. Universities are meant to be all about free expression of different ideas, some of which are bound to be offensive. Now, they often seem to be institutions where freedom of thought and expression are in a straight jacket. Anyone who dares to step out of line is shut down. Universities probably will end up becoming useless places if this trend keeps on going. This was briefly mentioned on Peta Credlin’s show on Sky News here in Australia last night because she was talking to Alan Jones, who was the talkback radio king for ages and now has a show on Sky News. He said that he had lived in that college when he went to that UK university on some type of scholarship years ago, ( he is now 80 years old so it would have been ages ago) and he was disgusted to hear about this incident..
gravenimage says
Agreed, Tim. And between skyrocketing student loan rates and this crazed “political correctness”, more intelligent and decent people may decide to eschew college altogether. So sad to see this.
tim gallagher says
I think you are right, gravenimage, about some people deciding to ditch going to universities. That is something that I have heard a few commentators say out here. They look at some of the drivel, left wing woke propaganda, that is taught in some of the university courses and say, well, don’t waste your time and money on that sort of garbage. Better to go and learn a trade. Out here, there has been a trend towards having almost everybody go to university for a decade or so and so we end up with too many graduates in certain fields. They talk about law graduates ending up working as baristas and that sort of thing. This crushing of freedom to express different ideas is a nasty thing. It smacks of fascist type control.
gravenimage says
Tim, while I understand some intelligent people eschewing college, the idea of ceding universities and intellectualism to this vicious “woke” nonsense is utterly abhorrent.
tim gallagher says
I agree, gravenimage. There needs to be a fightback against the prevailing rubbish. Some of the utter, almost insane, garbage that emanates from some university lecturers, which I hear about on the “Outsiders” program on Sky News, in a segment they call “Whackydemia” is amazing. They have another segment which they call “WeeklyWokely’ . They really tear into the culture wars type garbage – the critical race theory, etc. I keep hoping for a fightback to start. I think it will come. I’m certain that a lot of average people hear some of the weird nonsense and think, as I do, this is nuts.

UK: Oxford’s Worcester College apologizes ‘unreservedly’ for hosting ‘Islamophobic’ Christian conference
Christian Concern…said none of the students who complained or the college heard what was said in the seminars….
………………….
This is enormously common–pro forma rage over something that is not even heard–followed by copious and cringing apologies. Sickening.
mortimer says
Oxford U. is agreeing that Christian Concern is wrong to discuss why Christians are persecuted in Muslim countries.
Why is it wrong to discuss the persecution of Christians, if Oxford would permit a discussion of Muslims concerning religious persecution of Muslims in various regions? Myanmar or China, for instance?
How does Oxford deal with it when the shoe of religious persecution is ON THE OTHER FOOT?

Muslim apologists and the neo-Marxists at Oxford clearly do not want anyone to learn Islam’s canonical jihad teachings or taqiyya teachings.
Taqiyya may fairly be described as ‘verbal jihad’ used to deflect, dissemble, deceive and misdirect any discussion about jihadism.
Oxford’s leaders don’t realize that without clearly understanding the JIHADIST ENEMY, what he is thinking and what he is likely to do, we will be defeated in every battle by the jihadists … as was explained by the ancient sage Sun Tzu.
If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.” – Art of War – Sun Tzu
Students at Oxford should ALL be learning about jihadism, because ACADEMIC FREEDOM is ALREADY BEING SUPPRESSED BY IT … in this very case.

They should host a fire bombing conference for muslims. Just get it over with already.
I wont believe they are serious until they set themselves on fire.
