Islamic law forbids a man who is not married to a woman to see her unveiled. This is the source of the husband’s rage. He is demanding that the doctor, whether he is Muslim or not, behave in accord with Islamic norms. Of course, much of the non-Muslim world has agreed in other contexts that this should be done.

After a dermatologist examined a Muslim woman in Nizhnevartovsk, Russia, her husband stormed the practice. “I see you like looking at women’s bellies,” he said, and went straight to the attack. The doctor then fell from his chair and suffered a head injury and a concussion.
The background to this incident is that a woman wearing a headscarf went to the practice of the dermatologist Vladimir Schernoklejew on Tuesday and needed a medical consultation. At first she didn’t want to be examined by a man. The doctor offered to have a woman perform the examination. Finally the Muslim woman agreed, and Schernoklejew examined part of her abdomen. Then the woman left his practice. A little later, the patient’s husband appeared.
The surveillance camera recorded his attack on the dermatologist. Schernoklejew said he had examined many women in his practice, especially Muslim women, but had never seen a situation like this. The husband has since been arrested.

Ghayra or Gheira or Gheera or Gheyrah in Islam means ‘protective jealousy or rage’. The Salafi scholar Muhammad Al-Munajjid indicates that ‘the concept of GHEERA also applies to protecting Muhammad from blasphemy.’ Any private Muslim is free from punishment whenever he executes someone who insults or demeans Mohammed. Thus, any private Muslim may execute blasphemers with or without a fatwa if the state fails to execute.
Ghayrah (sometimes transliterated as ghayra, ghira, gheerah or gheera) is an Arabic word which means a person’s dislike of another’s sharing in a right (which belongs to the former). It has a sense of earnest zeal over something and can be considered a kind of protective jealousy. In Islam, there are different kinds of ghayrah: that which relates to Allah and Mohammed and which relates to a Muslim. Allah’s discontent is with sharing the obedience of his servant which rightfully belongs to him. For a Muslim it is the rage in his heart which moves him to guard his family from indecency and to kill in the name of honor.
While the concept of ghayrah is the source of honor killings in the Islamic world, but one Salafi scholar, Muhammad Al-Munajjid, agrees with the concept and asserts that punishment of any crime is reserved for the Islamic ruler. But scholars from Al Azhar university have said that if the state fails to punish a blasphemer or apostate, then ‘someone has to do it.’
So … in conclusion, if this Muslim’s wife cannot find a female doctor, she should remain untreated and suffer until death. That is what happened in Afghastlistan during the time of the Taliban.

She *declined* to be seen by a woman….the question is *why* did she decline?
The husband wasn’t there; the only way for him to know who had seen his wife was for her to tell him: “It was a ***man*** that saw me uncovered. He looked at my stomach.”

Upon this az-Zubair said, “By Allah, the thought of you carrying date-stones upon your head is more severe a burden on me than you riding with him.” (related in Sahih Bukhari)
“Narrated ‘Abdullah bin Masud: RasulAllah said: “There is none having a greater sense of ghayrah than Allah. And for that He has forbidden the doing of evil actions (illegal sexual intercourse etc.).” (related in Sahih Bukhari)[6]

Al-Mugheerah mentions that Sa’d ibn ‘Ubaadah said: “If I find a man with my wife I will take this sword and smite his neck”. And the Prophet said, “Are you amazed about Sa’d’s ghayrah?” He said: “By Allaah, I have more of this than Sa’d, and Allaah has more of it than me”. (related in Sahih Bukhari)[14] the Messenger of Allah said: “There is a kind of protective jealousy that Allah loves and a kind that Allah hates. As for that which Allah loves, it is protective jealousy when there are grounds for suspicion. And as for that which He hates, it is protective jealousy when there are no grounds for suspicion.” (Sunan ibn Majah Book 9, Hadith 2074)”
