WASHINGTON / BALKH, AFGHANISTAN – Many Afghans who hoped the Taliban would reform their extreme views amid ongoing talks with the Afghan government and the U.S. troop withdrawal have been disappointed by the new severe restrictions imposed on the local population in some of the districts that they have recently captured.
Several residents of Balkh, a district in northern Balkh province that is located 20 kilometers north of the provincial capital, Mazar-e Sharif, confirmed to VOA that the Taliban have distributed leaflets, ordering locals to follow strict rules that are similar to those they imposed on Afghans when they last governed the country from 1996 to 2001.
“They want to impose the restrictions that were imposed on women under their rule,” said Nahida, a 34-year-old resident of Balkh district, adding that the restrictions targeting women include “not leaving our houses without a male companion and wearing hijab.”
Before their ouster by the United States in 2001, the Taliban mandated Afghans follow a strict interpretation of Sharia law, forcing women to cover themselves from head to foot and preventing them from leaving their houses without a male companion.
That changed after 2001 when the new Afghan government, supported by U.S.-led forces, introduced laws to encourage more girls to attend school and to have more women participate in the workforce.
Nahida, who requested to be identified by her pseudonym due to safety concerns, said the group’s new restrictions will be difficult for women to follow “since many of them are the breadwinners of their families and they have to work outside.”…
Since May, when the United States and NATO began withdrawing their remaining troops, the Taliban captured about 100 of Afghanistan’s more than 400 districts from government-allied forces. Afghan officials have since vowed to retake the lost districts.
Another resident of Balkh, who requested anonymity due to fears of retaliation by the militants, said “salons were ordered not to shave or trim beards” when the Taliban controlled the district last month.
“It is possible that they impose more restrictions. In some of the mosques, during the Friday sermons, Mullahs say that the Sharia law should be implemented,” another Balkh resident told VOA.
In several districts of Takhar, Badakhshan, and Kunduz province that came under the Taliban control recently, local reports claim the Taliban issued similar restrictions on women and forced men to grow beards….

I’m a Western (American, to be exact) feminist, and I always speak up about abuse and mistreatment of women in Islamic countries and Islamic communities in the West. But you’re right, not enough so-called feminists, and human rights supporters in general, do speak up.
Unfortunately, many times I’ve gotten comments like “all religions have extremists” and “Judaism and Christianity (and other faiths) are bad to females too.” BAH!!! So in other words, because “other religions are also misogynistic, not just Islam” we should just turn a blind eye to the abuses and struggles of Muslim women and girls, and not speak up for them. -_-

What can we expect. These cultures have been that way forever. And anthropologists even endorse protecting seemingly archaic cultures. Now, what if they changed the outmoded sharia practices, there might be a breakdown of the culture, say anthropologists. Perhaps that is why feminists and social scientists do not oppose the imposition of sharia. But they also do not oppose sharia in Western cultures, where they are, to use terminology, dysfunctional. Or simply bad, in ordinary terms. So, of course we do not like this, but we are supposed to respect other cultures, even ones being forced on us by migrants and the leftist parties. I rarely disagree with you, Infidel, but I do here. Banning beards in the US would not meet any Constitutional standard, indeed would trivialize American law, and is not necessary at all as long as Islam is placed in the same category with other totalitarian ideologies like Nazism and Marxism.
Free societies should not limit freedom in order to preserve it. “All” that has to be done is to properly characterize something which is evil as evil. Besides, if Islam is not characterized as iniquitous, then banning beards on Muslims and all other men because of Islam would be a non-starter. Proper and accurate exposure of Islam’s “true worth” is enough in a free society and if such proper and accurate exposure is not forthcoming (ain’t yet) then something like beard banning is not going to occur.

For the record, Infidel, Alexander Solzhenitsyn did not have a high opinion of Peter the Great because he felt Peter the Great turned his back on Russian culture and Russian uniqueness in order to Westernize Russia. I’m not entirely in agreement with Solzhenitsyn here but I do understand his point.
Of course, Westernization by adopting only some Western aspects, generally the technological elements—as also the Japanese did in the late19th and early 20th centuries—just really doesn’t work all that well if you don’t add to Westernization the key element in it all—freedom. The Japanese didn’t nor did the Russians. This is a major point of Victor Davis Hanson in several of his works, for instance his “Carnage and Culture.”

I was in a fabric store a few years ago, some of the workers wore ghost outfits, customers seemed to be all kissy ass about their attire, some thought they were cute, I left simply because I could not stand the sight of them. Throughout history women have been discriminated against and seen as inferior. Even today there are fundamental kooks in the West who don’t believe women should have equal rights and fair treatment, and even today there are certain other countries, cultures, religions, etc., where being female is practically a death sentence. Which is why it makes absolutely no sense for any man to wish he was a woman, let alone actually try to “become” one.

Viewing the history of the Taliban when they were in power in Afghanistan and the brutal ruthless misogyny they had engaged in was both vicious and malicious to the extreme.
Therefore the question, naturally, was brought up, now that peace talks” might soon begin, the Taliban was asked if they return to power in Afghanistan “ would they respect female rights ?”
To that question the Taliban replied “that when back in power they would respect.
Women‘s rights but only to the limits of the cultural of will they permit those rights of women.”
The point is that the “cultural of Afghanistan” is really the religion of Afghanistan, which is Islam.
Therefore the reality is that female rights, for both girls and woman, will not exist in a future Taliban controlled Islamic state of Afghanistan. For Islam is a religion of harsh and malice- filled misogyny.
As explained in the book, by Brigitte Gabriel, of the title THEY MUST BE STOPPED. Her book informs the readers on page 172. “Woman in Islam are considered unclean, deemed inferior even to dirt.”
