He shouted “Allah Akbar” several times and then broke down the front door of the Heart of Jesus convent in the historic center of Mazara del Vallo.
There were moments of tension and fear in the seaside village in the province of Trapani due to a young North African in a state of intoxication who turned some rooms of the convent upside down.
Fortunately, the nuns who live in the ecclesiastical structure were eating in the refectory during the vandalism by the Maghrebi. The 25-year-old boy was half naked; he broke down the door of the church entrance and went to the first floor of the convent. After having turned upside down several rooms where the nuns live, he threw a suitcase and papers from a window on the first floor, making them land in the hall. The bustle and screams were noticed by a citizen of Mazara del Vallo who lives right in front of the convent. The man alerted the police, making the carabinieri and the police intervene. Meanwhile, the nuns, frightened by the incident, took refuge outside the convent. The North African’s attempt to escape in a state of intoxication was stopped by police officers. He was transported to the police statio.
There was so much fear among the nuns. “The neighbor saw that he broke the door”, says one of the nuns who live in the structure to the local online newspaper Prima Pagina Mazara. “The neighbor came to call upon us. At that moment, we were in the refectory, having lunch. In the sacristy he passed by the ladder and went up. And he had time: there was no one around…”
Just a few weeks ago, another North African created problems of public order while in a state of intoxication, reacting to officers by starting to shout “Allah Akbar” and mimicking the possession of a weapon. This happened in Ferrara. The young 20-year-old Tunisian arrived in Sicily on 3 August by boat and then, after escaping from the center where he was staying, arrived in Ferrara. After the attack on the police, the Tunisian was expelled from Italy.The mayor of Ferrara, Alan Fabbri, was satisfied: “Thanks to the police authorities and officers for the expulsion, and congratulations for carrying out the operation”, he declared. “Whoever comes to Ferrara and does not respect the rules is not welcome and deserves only to be sent back to his country of origin … I renew my thanks to the police and to all the law enforcement agencies that are daily involved in protecting the security of the city. We expect cases like this to be a warning to anyone who deceives themselves that they can violate the rules. Ferrara is unwilling to accept events of this type”.
