Greece charged 35 European aid workers with espionage yesterday, accusing them of helping to smuggle thousands of migrants and refugees from Turkey.
The conservative government in Athens is wary of refugee relief groups “overstepping” their humanitarian mandate. Details of the suspects, who are mostly Germans, as well as Austrians and Swedes, were not released.
“We have been clear and firm about putting an end to practices facilitating illegal immigration,” Michalis Chrysochoidis, the public order minister, said. “It’s game over for [them].” He said he would seek international arrest warrants “seek out all the suspects, however long it takes”.
