Mainstream analysts routinely point to the killing of fellow Muslims by Islamic jihadis as proof that the jihadis aren’t actually Muslims at all, but have twisted and hijacked the religion of peace and are making war against true Muslims and non-Muslims alike. The reality, however, is that Islamic law mandates a death penalty for heresy and apostasy, and so jihadis attack Muslims from rival groups and sects all the time. This is why many Muslim spokesmen refer to jihadis as “takfiris,” that is, those who pronounce takfir, the declaration that some other Muslim individual or group is actually non-Muslim.
