It’s clear where this is tending, and what kind of future NRK and the Norwegian political and media elites in general want. They think that if they show good will to the nation’s rapidly growing Muslim community, the Muslim communities will reciprocate, and everyone will march together into the glorious multicultural future. While that will certainly be true of some Muslims, others will continue to hold Norwegian society and law in contempt. They will see the Norwegian media’s outreach as a sign of weakness and accordingly become even more aggressive. What will the Norwegian government do then?
“Norwegian state TV promotes a hijab-wearing woman on promo ad for Constitution Day,” Voice of Europe, May 16, 2020:
Some Norwegians are outraged after the broadcaster, in a promotional ad for Norway’s national day of independence on May 17th, featured a woman in a hijab standing next to the Norwegian flag.
“Is promoting a hijab in line with NRK’s mission? Hijab stands for something else than what we are celebrating wrote Jan Otto Viken from Resett Norway
This isn’t the first time NRK has prompted widespread anger during their coverage of Constitution Day. In 2015, the broadcaster feature the Norwegian flag without the cross so as not to offend any religious minorities.
And recently, Linda Noor – a Norwegian convert to Islam and the leader of the government sponsored think tank Minotenk – defended a Muslim man’s “right” to have more than one wife, the news portal Rights Norway reported.
“If people want more wives in Islamic marriages, or if they want to do things I don’t like, then people have to accept this. Tolerance must go all the way, as long as it does not harm anyone,” Noor said.
