Despite having been born in Germany, however, the suspect clearly does not consider himself German, but rather thinks of himself as a citizen of the Islamic State. Where did he get such an idea as he was growing up in Germany? Is his mosque being investigated? Why not?

He is a supporter of the “Islamic State,” says the suspect in several attacks in Waldkraiburg. When he was arrested, he had several explosive devices with him. His lack of a ticket was his undoing.
When the window panes of a grocery store in Waldkraiburg burst and the shop went up in flames in the early morning hours of April 27, many people in the Bavarian city no longer believed in coincidence. The fire developed quickly, residents could no longer escape via the main entrance to the building, and six residents were injured. Only the warnings of a local resident and the rapid intervention of the fire brigade prevented worse. Only a ruin remains of the business; there is damage in the millions.
The arson attack, which later turned out to be preceded by an explosion, was part of a series of attacks: within ten days, in addition to the attack on the fruit and vegetable shop in Waldkraiburg, stone-throwing attacks occurred against a hairdressing salon, a pizzeria and finally a kebab shop. All the victims are of Turkish descent. The local criminal police founded the fifty-member special commission “Prager”, and the central office for combating extremism and terrorism of the Munich Attorney General took over the management of the case.

In the meantime, a 25-year-old man who confessed to all four deeds and for whom a warrant was issued has been arrested. The suspect is a German citizen born near Waldkraiburg, whose parents come from Turkey. According to the investigators, he expressly denied any action due to the Kurdish-Turkish conflict. He had been unemployed for several months. Witnesses heard by investigators have reported an Islamic religious radicalization of the man in recent years, which has led to disagreements with his family. Apart from violations of the Narcotics Act, he had not previously committed a criminal offense.
The man was noticed at the train station in Mühldorf am Inn because he did not have a valid ticket. He carried with him a suitcase and a sports bag, which contained ten ignitable pipe bombs and 20 kilograms of chemical materials for the production of explosives. For safety’s sake, the station was cleared and largely closed.
After the arrest of the man, investigators from the State Criminal Police Office searched the perpetrator’s apartment in Waldkraiburg and a vehicle in an underground garage in Garching an der Alz. According to the investigators, the vehicle contained 13 further functional bombs and ten kilograms of materials suitable as explosives. A gun with ammunition, black powder and other explosive substances were also found in the perpetrator’s apartment. The man made the bombs himself and said that he had planned further attacks. He had no specific goals, but his plans were directed against Turkish institutions. Investigators are currently investigating whether there are accomplices or confidants and where he got his weapons and materials from….
