An update on this story. It appears that in the wake of the New Zealand massacre, Dutch authorities are treating all random shootings as if they were perpetrated by white supremacists and “Islamophobes.” It is possible that this shooting in Utrecht was indeed perpetrated by such a person. It is also possible that this was a jihad attack, but churches and synagogues are not being evacuated as a precaution.

Eyewitnesses have described the terrifying scenes as passengers were gunned down on a tram in a Dutch city this morning.
One person has died and numerous others are injured following the shooting at 10.45am local time in Utrecht.
Police have said they are investigating if there was a “terrorist motive” for the attack and are looking into whether there were multiple gunmen.
Primary schools were placed on lockdown and all mosques in Utrecht have been evacuated as a precaution.
Utrecht University has also closed all its buildings and no one is allowed in or out.
One woman told NRC that a man got up and started shooting “with a big gun”.
She escaped the gun fire by jumping through a smashed window.
“I was in the back of the tram. He shot around, but seemed to be aiming at people sitting on the benches – everyone ducked away,” she said.
“The conductor did not open the doors immediately. Two boys next to me kicked in a window, so I fled outside. More people did that.”
