Islamic supremacists have always been notable for their chutzpah, and Tariq Ramadan is no exception. Women’s rights indeed. One of Ramadan’s accusers says he told her he was raping her “because you don’t wear a hijab.”

Tariq Ramadan, still indicted for rape in two cases and under judicial supervision, was seen last night in Saint-Denis during a meeting “against violence against women on a daily basis,” in the presence of Danièle Obono and Françoise Vergès. This meeting was organized by Majid Messaoudène, decolonial activist and contumacious city councilor of La France, in charge of equality and women’s rights at the town hall of Saint-Denis. Women who disagree with her presence have left the room.
The Muslim preacher, who has moved to Saint-Denis since his parole, has been seen several times in the city in recent days. He was detained in the prison of Fleury-Mérogis from February 2 to November 15, 2018 following his indictment for “rape” and “rape of a vulnerable person.” At least three women have lodged complaints against him. On March 14, the Paris Court of Appeal rejected a request filed by Tariq Ramadan’s lawyers for the lifting of the two indictments.
“His coming into the room as a spectator to the debate is an unacceptable provocation (…),” said the indignant mayor of Saint-Denis. His presence is “totally indecent. The elected person in charge of the organization of the debate, as well as many participants, thus repeatedly asked Mr. Ramadan to leave the room. His refusal to leave the room was an insult to people who were legitimately shocked by his presence,” adds a municipal official. And he asked the Islamologist to demonstrate “a minimum of decency by leaving those who fight against violence against women in peace.”
