It’s Islamic History Month in Canada, and in the Globe and Mail, Sheema Khan says: “While a dangerous fringe harbours anti-Muslim sentiment, it is unfair to tarnish all opponents of the proposition as bigots. We must allow for open discussion without tossing in the accusation of ‘Islamophobia,’ which pre-empts meaningful engagement.”
I couldn’t agree more. In fact, in the interest of open discussion and meaningful engagement, I’m offering here and now to send Sheema Khan a free copy of my book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS. What better way to celebrate Islamic History Month than by actually reading about that history, often in the words of Muslim chroniclers, who recorded what they considered to be the glorious deeds of the jihadis, and whom I quote extensively in the book?
A hadith depicts a Muslim asking Muhammad: “Instruct me as to such a deed as equals Jihad (in reward).” Muhammad replied, “I do not find such a deed.” (Bukhari 4.52.44) So October is the perfect month for Muslims and non-Muslims alike to become acquainted with the history of jihad, and to see what bounties this concept has brought to mankind.
