This Tuesday my new book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS will be officially released. The preorders will be fulfilled, and those of you who have preordered the book (for which I thank you) should have the book soon.
This is my eighteenth book launch week, and while some of those weeks have been higher profile, I don’t think I’ve ever been as happy about a book launch, except maybe the first one, as I am about this one. I’ve written all my books because I saw that there needed to be a book about a particular issue that had not been covered, but never more so than this time. This is the first, and only, chronological narrative history of the entire 1,400-year phenomenon of jihad in the English language.
Why this book, and why now?
Because right now, and maybe not for very long, we have a chance to roll back at least some of the failed policies that have been based on false assumptions about Islam and jihad: the idea that poverty causes terrorism, the idea that gestures of kindness and generosity will be met with reciprocal good will, the idea that the vast majority of Muslims reject and abhor jihad violence and are on the front lines of opposing and resisting it, and much more.
The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS is a blow against the program of utopian nation building, which is based on the idea that Islam could be whatever Islamic apologists, or the American policymakers who were listening to them, wanted it to be.
Instead, this book tells you what Islam and jihad always have been, and likely will be for the foreseeable future, since there has been no reformation in Islam that rejects the literal understanding of the Qur’an, and no such reformation is on the horizon.
This book could keep us from killing more Americans in the future in a futile effort to try to establish democracy in the Muslim world.
