What the Blazes? Anti-Israel Groups Blame Israel for California Wildfires

No charge is too crazy for the anti-Israel brigade. Now they are blaming Israel for the wildfires in Los Angeles. Their thinking goes this way: the money that is spent on weapons for Israel is money that otherwise could have been spent on firefighting measures: more firetrucks, more firemen, more airplanes to scoop up sea water which is then used to dowse the flames. US Jewish groups condemned anti-Israel activists on Thursday for blaming the Los Angeles wildfire crisis on Israel.

Several anti-Israel groups and commentators linked the war in Gaza and US military spending on Israel to the catastrophic fires.

Code Pink, a far-left activist group, said on Instagram, “When US taxes go to burning people alive in Gaza, we can’t be surprised when those fires come home.”

The group also said it was pressuring California Senator Alex Padilla at his Washington, DC office, tying the war to climate change.

California sees blazes most years, with the wildfire season typically beginning in June or July and running through October, according to the Western Fire Chiefs Association. But CalFire says January wildfires are not unprecedented; there was one in 2022 and 10 in 2021.

The season is beginning earlier and ending later due to rising temperatures and decreased rainfall tied to climate change, according to recent data. Rains that usually end fire season are often delayed, meaning fires can burn through the winter months, the association said.

The New York branch of the anti-Zionist Jewish Voice for Peace, in an Instagram post about the fires, said, “Instead of putting resources toward making our country livable, our government is putting billions toward Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.”

“Genocide”? But if Israel wants to commit genocide, why does it make a tremendous effort to warn civilians in Gaza away from sites — from neighborhoods to buildings — that are soon to be targeted? Why by March had the IDF dropped nine million leaflets, sent fifteen million text messages, made sixteen million robocalls, to warn those civilians? If Israel is committing “genocide,” why is it now treating wounded Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorists in Israeli hospitals?

Fatima Mohammed, a leader of New York’s hardline anti-Israel group Within Our Lifetime, posted an image of the fires and said, “The flames of Gaza will not stop there.”

“Dropping hundreds of thousands of bombs on Gaza, turning it into a blazing inferno, has consequences,” she said. “There are climate consequences that will find us all.”

Commentator Mehdi Hasan also linked US military aid to Israel to the Los Angeles Fire Department’s budget.

The Los Angeles Fire Department is mainly funded by the city of Los Angeles, while military spending for Israel comes from the federal government.

There is no financial connection between the Los Angeles Fire Department, which is supported entirely by city funds, and military spending by the federal government. Mehdi Hasan needs a lesson in federalism.

And what about the ferocious opposition of the Arab oil states to the adoption of measures that would cut down on the use of fossil fuels? Why do none of these “progressive” groups, no doubt alarmed about global warming, ever note how Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies try to water down every proposal to decrease the use of oil and gas? They won’t raise the matter because nothing must get in the way of their determination to blame Israel for all the world’s problems.

This attempt to blame the aid given to Israel for a lack of spending on wildfire suppression is the latest theme of the anti-Israel agitators. In New York, for example, anti-Israel demonstrators blamed spending on weapons for Israel for the decision of the New York Public Library to institute budget cuts that caused the library to close on Sundays. Of course, the NYPL is supported not by federal, but by city funds; federal spending on aid for Israel has no bearing on the city’s support for the library.

The annual federal budget is over $6 trillion. A minuscule amount of that total — $3.8 billion — is normally spent each year on military aid to Israel. But since the war in Gaza began in October 2023, American aid to the embattled Jewish state, now engaged in a seven-front war, has increased by $13 billion to a total of $17 billion. Once the campaigns against Hamas and Hezbollah are over, spending on weapons for Israel should return to the antebellum figure of $3.8 billion.

    As for Israel committing “genocide” in Gaza – some Israeli commentator said if Israel wanted to commit genocide, the war would have been over Oct 8.
    And if the “climate change” people really believed CO2 emissions were so bad, they would be pushing for the proven non-CO2-emitting source: Nuclear power.

      To your point, modern nuclear power plants are incredibly safe and effective.

        Nuclear power is expensive because of all the protests and legal challenges driving up the cost of building a nuclear plant; both the direct costs and the interest in money borrowed to build the plant increases as the start time gets delayed.
        Another reason I don’t like Carter. He ended the breeder reactor project. I had nothing to do with it, but while on a summer program at Argonne, was maybe 2 feet away from a small test reactor, ZPR-9. And I don’t glow in the dark, nor do I have mutant superpowers (wish I did have the superpowers, though)

    • The large homeless many with mental illness and or drug problems living in the woods in those areas .The state has the most homeless because you can live outside year around and the great bennies you get being” a lay about” in Californian it is the kingdom of the homeless and ,loonies .My money is it was the homeless camps starting the fires.     • Trump offered Newsome unlimited water 5 years ago, Newsome turned it down, The reservoirs were empty, no cutting back of dangerous brush, giving equipment to Ukraine, concentrating on diversity…. the list goes on & on. Either it was monumental failure from the Democrats in charge or a plan to burn it all down & create their 15 minute city in its place.

      • I forgot to mention budget cuts, no fire hydrant testing & all the reservoirs drained. The Mayor fired the diversity hire fire chief after she criticised her, I think she might have been told to re-instate her by Newsome because she is back. It gets to a stage where you add up all the incompetence & you have to come to the conclusion it was intentional. If there is no water to stop your house burning down that’s intentional from higher up.

    And Code Pink is not even this (comparatively) rational. but believes that since Israel defends against Jihad terror against her people that Americans *deserve* to lose their homes and die in wildfires here. Sick, sick stuff.

  8. Sheer lunacy! It’s like this: Israel can do nothing right, and is to blame for everything wrong in the world. (This is the Islamic take, and has been foolishness has been embraced and spread by other antisemites such as leftists, and far-right conspiracists)

    Then, on the other side of it, Islam can do no wrong. Men who rape children are let off because they said they didn’t know it’s not okay in UK to have sex (molest, rape) a 13-year old. “Grooming” gang rapists are still walking the streets while someone who complains about that fact is behind bars, for speaking up.

    And if they are caught in the act of some terrible assault and terror incident, it is declared “mental illness” so they don’t get the full force of the law, nor does Islam get ANY of the blame for fueling that particular fire–though the terrorist retorts, “no, I did it for Islam! Allahu akbar!”

  10. The Israelis stole the water after California officials let it wash out to sea. Israelis snuck in to California (probably across the southern border) and drained all the reservoirs. The Israelis ( not the California left) made sure the unqualified were promoted to key positions based solely on their race and sexual preference. Israelis sabotaged the fire hydrants but that was a waste of time because those hydrants had no water in the first place. And now the white male hating California left has had to rely on those terrible white firefighters to stop what they themselves created. I am really sick of white guys having to go in and clean up the messes that the anti while male California leftist establishment creates. Why cant they just leave us alone and deal with their problems themselves? I know the answer which is the same answer of why and how it got to this in the first place.

  12. The blame for these out of control fires rests totally with Gavin Newsome and the California legislature and not one else. Gavin and the Legislature did nothing to prevent these fires nor contain them. These wildfires occur in CA every year.
